99.9~Keijisenmon Bengoshi~ sII [Episode 3 Extra Notes]

The extra notes for episode 3! Not as many as episode 2 (thankfully), but still quite a few! I apologize if my "extra notes" posts seem to change with every episode. This is why I could never become a professional blogger, I have no idea how to keep things standardized. There will be an explanation for my puns at the end of the post though, so, hopefully that stays the same throughout? *ignores the notes for episode 1*.

1. Guest star
The actor who plays Joker Chigasaki in this episode is Uzaki Ryudo, the main vocalist of a band called Down Town Boogie-Woogie Band.

2. Itokonchi
Kanako's latest album!
Kanako's new album, "スモークチキンブギ" (Smoke Chicken Boogie) is an parodyhomage to the song "Smoking Boogie" by Down Town Boogie Woogie Band.

As I noted in the episode, this is manga artist Masakazu Katsura. Katsura is also the word for wig in Japanese. He is appearing as himself.

3. Udon Restaurant

The name of the udon restaurant that Maiko and the other judges eat at is "Udon Houtei". Houtei can also be written as 法廷=law.
The actor for the udon restaurant owner is actually voice actor Wataru Takagi, who did the voice for Detective Conan, Ganju from Bleach and Obito from Naruto: Shippuden.

As I stated in the episode, this is pro-wrestler Yoshi Tatsu. He is appearing as himself. The phrase "Hunter Chance" comes from Yoshi Tatu's wrestling club "Hunters Club", who gave a chance to wrestler "Captain New Japan" by letting him join the club despite not having a good record.

最高菜→最高裁 = (saikousai - Top vegetable | Supreme Court)
実鶏飯→実刑犯 = (Jikkeihan - Real Chicken Rice | Prison sentence)
駄津極飯→脱獄犯 = (Datsugokuhan = Datsu Rice | A fugitive) *Datsu is a type of fish.

4. Chigazaki's Company

The name of Chigazaki's company, 武技宇技音楽事務所, or "Bu-gi U-gi Ongaki Jimusho" (Boogie Woogie Records). A nod to the band Down Town Boogie Woogie Band.

Many of the posters in the background are actually homages to other Japanese bands.

・SEKAI NO OKAWARI→SEKAI NO OWARI
・Debugon Night→Dragon Night
・田んぼマスター(Tambomaster)→Sambomaster
・腹まわりの肉はわりと余分だぜ (Haramawari no Niku ha Wari to Yobun Daze) →Sekai ha Sore ha Ai to Yobun Daze *a song by Sambomaster

5. Pokemon Go?!

This is a news report from Orogon Hobby's - a company that appeared in season 1, episode 7. They have apparently released something called "Getemono Go" (getemono = low quality goods) which may sound very similar to a popular game, Pokemon Go.

6. Talking in her sleep?

During flashbacks to Ishikawa being attacked the mumbles something in her sleep - the phrase "同情するなら" (If you care). This is a famous line from the actress who plays Ishikawa, Adachi Yumi, from her drama Ienakiko.

7. Shiga-sensei returns!
People have been tweeting angrily about Sada and it looks like Shiga-sensei has joined in on the fray by releasing information about the companies Sada handles! If you look at the tweet handle you will notice it comes from someone called Shigabon, which twitter handle @lets_begin, the name of Shiga's new company!

8. At the Cafe!

The name of the kindergarten is Ooizumi Youchien (Kindergarten). This is probably a nod to the actor Ooizumi You. The second name they give the kindergarten, Nakkusu is also a nod to Ooizumi's acting group, TEAM NACS.

This is a photo of pro-wrestler Yuji Nagata. His catchphrase, which you have heard multiple times throughout both seasons of 99.9 is "There!"

9. Punny explanations/Other verbal jokes
  • 勝手おじさん (katte ojisan) - If you have a good ear, you might have realized that the cast have often started calling Sada-sensei "katte ojisan" under their breaths. I've translated it differently at different parts, but in general when you describe someone as 勝手 it means they only think of themselves and encompasses arrogance, selfishness, being self-centered etc. Basically - it is the perfect description of Sada-sensei!
  • Caught on camera or framed?! - I'm not going to lie, part of the reason this episode took so long to release is because I actually could not think of a proper pun for this part. Since Miyama is holding a photo of the evidence, I was making a joke on something being in the camera frame - and also, it's a photo of an actual photo frame! So the evidence (the photo frame) wasn't just caught on camera, but it was framed because it's in the camera frame and an actual photo frame. Get it? GET IT? (*...feels a cold draft blowing by...*)
  • Focus on your passions - Okay, this was a cop out. I was just playing around with how, when you take photos you need to "focus" your camera properly, so that's where this pun comes from.
  • Moaitual Love/Moaish together/Moais he coming? - I pretty much kept these word plays as-is because I thought they actually made sense in English and definitely is along the same lines of what Miyama is doing in Japanese, which is just twisting the word "Moai" to suit his needs.
Okay. I hope I didn't forget anything. If anyone has questions about additional parts of the episode, feel free to ask!
