Sexy Zone 5pecial Trip Thoughts

I'm re-sharing my twitter thread here because twitter fucked up my thread, and then I realized, why am I even trying to write long-form thoughts on twitter when this place exists? So, just some random ramblings regarding the 5pecial Trip as well as general thoughts I have about 5nin Sexy Zone.

At first when I only saw the video length for the trip I thought "Only?" Knowing that they went on an overnight trip, I wanted the footage to be at least 2, if not 3 hours long. Especially remembering some of the other trips they've had, and the fact that this one will be their last. After watching it though, I realized we got just enough. There were photos of moments that we clearly weren't privy too (going to an onsen) and it was clear that they spent a lot longer talking and drinking in their room, but I think it's okay that they didn't show those parts. Ultimately this trip was for them, and it's a gift that they allowed us to see some of it. I think they deserve to have some moments that were just for them as well.

Credits to Wada-san for editing this trip so well though! Truly. I can't believe I could laugh so hard at the start and be crying so hard by the end and it all feels natural. I wasn't even really crying because I was sad, but purely because it was genuinely moving to hear their raw and honest thoughts and feelings at the very end. I think even the guys themselves had mentally prepared to wrap up the trip in their typical way, and to be shocked by their staff, it really allowed them to also let their own thoughts out organically. Honestly, the moment at the end felt a bit private, but I'm so grateful that they were willing to show us that.

Of course, I already knew seeing Fuma cry was going to get to me, but it's really Marius' final thoughts that really got to me. Him admitting how hard it was for him, how he was actually trying to pretend everything was okay. As I said in my translation to "Sore de Ii yo" - I think Marius had probably been struggling for a long time, but to hear him say it was... it was touching. It was a true moment of vulnerability that as fans, we are almost never privy to from our idols (and I don't think we should be privy too honestly).

It really is wild to imagine Marius life. To debut at eleven having moved from Germany to Japan. If there's any Johnny's I think I would really want to pick the brains of, it really is the Sexy Zone members, and Marius in particular. They were all so young, and their perspective on being an idol honestly must be quite different from I think even a lot of other Johnny's except maybe the HSJ members.

What I love even more though is how the guys were able to be themselves throughout the rest of the trip. The dynamic of 5nin Sexy Zone really is something special, and I will truly miss this dynamic moving forward. It's like Arashi - they all bring out the best of each other, and they genuinely just seem to enjoy being around each other. I love how they were able to bring back old jokes and them writing "Desaiso" for Marius was such a classic older sibling/younger sibling thing to do, but also felt so right. I don't think writing an actual heartfelt message like "Thank you" or "We love you" would have hit the same as something like that.

I mean, in a lot of ways that message WAS meaningful. It really showed that some things can still stay the same. Sure, Marius can't perform with them, but they can still talk and meet up. Marius will still have them as brothers and he will still be their youngest brother. And we as fans just won't be privy to that relationship anymore.

Marius and Kento used the word 運命 (unmei // destiny) to describe them coming together as Sexy Zone, but as a fan, I feel like Sexy Zone's journey and existence is 奇跡的 (kisekiteki // miraculous). They may have been brought together by fate, but what was created feels like a miracle. I like to think the world is in general, filled with good people. But all of them were truly lucky to be placed in Sexy Zone. All of them are so different, but they're all fundamentally so good, respectful, kind and open-minded. If things had been even slightly different, if they hadn't been so accepting of Marius and if he himself wasn't such a sweet kid, if Fuma or Kento hadn't been as able to shoulder responsibility as they both did, if Shori wasn't so steady, if Sou-chan wasn't by Marius' side, I don't think this group would have made it past the 3/2 split back in 2014/2015. Despite everything, the fact that I think they genuinely felt safe with each other, means a lot. That's honestly rare to find, especially at such a young age, in an environment like that.

I think it's also meaningful that I got into Sexy Zone at this time in my life.

Arashi were great role models as a youth, and I needed them at the age I discovered them. Thirteen, confused, lonely. They made life seem straightforward and made me feel like eventually, everything would work out. I needed that then. I needed a sense that the future was stable. That if you worked hard, you would succeed, and then you would retire. As much as Arashi fans like to talk about how unpopular Arashi was, in a lot of ways their success and their trajectory was actually very linear. They started low, worked hard, and steadily worked their way up and up to become national idols and then they stayed their. But eventually, as I grew up... I think I began to realize that life actually wasn't like that. Eventually I realized I couldn't relate or seek the same guidance in Arashi as I did before. I had grown up - as the Arashi members had, but I didn't need adult mentors now, I needed mentors who were around the same age as me.

Enter Sexy Zone. I realize having a group like Sexy Zone, with all their ups and downs, trials and tribulations, setbacks and persistence - they help me feel better about facing life as it feels like it is to me now - Jeremy Beremy. Messy. Chaotic. For a group like Sexy Zone, I think they also very much started out with straightforward dreams and the idea that if they just worked hard and listened to the adults, everything would work out. But they didn't. Nothing did for them. They got split up, members went on hiatus, constant stops and starts. The conclusion that Sexy Zone came to, which they shared in "Timeless" was the realization that there is actually no right answer. All we can do is continue to face forward, take a step--in whatever direction that may be--support each other and try your best. That might even mean we take steps in different directions, that all our paths actually look completely different and criss-cross and wind in a tangled mess, but still we keep going with the surety that we're all still trying to get to the same place.

It's inspiring for me to know Sexy Zone's journey, the journey of each of the individual members, and to also witness the specific way they have handled this moment. This separation, this change, and yet still present it as not a set back - but yet again, another opportunity. Just a change. Just a member walking down a different path, but still a member.

Watching the 5pecial trip really gave me the closure I needed. I think it truly helped me to accept that while this is an ending, it's also a new beginning, and that's okay. Thank you for giving us this Sexy Zone. Thank you for letting us witness this. Thank you for handling things the way all of you did.

I am truly thankful that I follow idols who have managed to be so respectful, thoughtful, and emotionally understanding. This experience has really solidified the fact that I will probably be a fan of these boys and follow them, just like Arashi, for as long as they will allow me to. 5人いつも応援します! 愛してる!

So. Sexy Zone.

Hello, it's been a hot minute eh?

I know I was never very active on this blog, but a lot has happened since I made it in 2013 to now. It's been a decade. This blog was a continuation from my vox (yeah, remember that?), but I remember hoping that I could use it as my main fangirl space, but then I just got looped into tumblr and never really left. I would like to come back here though because tumblr has kind of died as a fandom space and no matter what, I will never really jump onto the twitter or discord train.

Ten years ago I was still in undergrad. Ten years ago Arashi was still going strong. Ten years ago a group called Sexy Zone had just entered their second year.

Yeah. Sexy Zone. It's funny. I remember when Sexy Zone was formed. I'm the same age as Kento so I remember being horrified. If you had asked me back then if you ever thought I would be a fan of the group, I would've laughed in your face so hard. Well, guess who is laughing now.

The astute observer may have noticed, I actually translated two SZ songs in 2019. But truth be told, they first entered my radar in 2016 when they guested on VSA, and then Shiyagare and Yakai, and then partnered with Arashi for WWG in 2017 and 2018. Right off the bat, I was immediately charmed by Nakajima Sexy Kento (thanks Nino). Their songs were still a bit too cutesy though and they were clearly still barely getting their grip in the industry so there wasn't much to follow. The impetus for 2019 though was the #sexylawsuit trend on twitter, when fans of a certain kpop group tried to throw Kenty under the bus for "plagarising". From there I learned about "Because of Ai", I stumbled across Kenty's Mission:K solo con (which I LOVE) and absolutely fell in love with SZ's PAGES and XYZ=Repainting albums, and then I watched Sexy Zone Channel and I was basically gone.

Well I would have been, but in 2019 I remember thinking I would wait until So-chan came back to properly stan them. But then COVID happened, and Arashi's actual hiatus came around and so when So-chan actually came back I was preoccupied. And then Marius went on hiatus, and I was like "oh, well I'll just wait until he comes back" - also because I had thought Marius would be back quickly (oh the irony...). But he clearly didn't come back quickly. And after Arashi's hiatus I basically dipped out of Johnny's fandom for a very long time until Summer 2022.

That's when Sexy Zone released "The Highlight". Thanks to Fuma being part of Janino Channel, and the fact that I realize Marius had been gone for about as long as So-chan, and I had no Arashi to focus on, I latched onto Sexy Zone like a person seeking water in a dessert. It helped that "The Highlight" is an absolute banger of an album. So yeah, jumped back on the train and this is my new ride or die Johnny's group.

I guess I have just have a thing for 5 people groups (Sexy Zone will always, always, be five people).

Even if my entire twitter was getting into Naniwa Danshi, and Snowman and Michi and whatever. I took a hard left turn into Sexy Zone and I'm not leaving.

So.

This long post is really just to say - please be prepared for a slew of Sexy Zone related translations to be shared on this blog. I've already shared a few subs on the sexy_zone LJ group, but I didn't really know where to share magazine/song translations and then I remembered this place! So please stay tuned :)

We Survived! Onto 2021~

What the actual fuck was 2020 eh? It's honestly a bit painful reading my post from last year - I had so many hopes for 2020 and here I am ending the year, once again, jobless.

Honestly, I was a bit hesitant about even making this post. Partially because I am coming off 5 hours of sleep after having said farewell to Arashi, but also because... I mean. What the fuck 2020? But ultimately I think I do still have things I want to reflect on and think about, so without further ado: how did I survive 2020?

Reflecting as we enter 2020

I think for everyone 2019 has been a rough year just due to things happening in the world, but in particular, 2019 really was quite a rough year. At the same time, I feel like I can only make this statement precisely because towards the end of 2019, things have started to turn upwards and I am actually able to look at 2020 with a semblance of hope, renewed energy, and a sense of contentment that I think I've definitely lacked since I moved here to Toronto.

I feel like there are actually so many things I want to say, and to reflect on, but I honestly don't know where to start, so I'm just going to do my usual and see where the questions take me and if I have anything else to add at the end, I'll add it.

Without further ado though, let's look back at 2019 and see what happened!

A much needed change for 2019 please?

2018 has been a wild ride to say the least. I sort of knew going in to it that it would probably be one of the more pivotal years of my life just due to the fact that I was graduating, but I was not prepared for just how much would... happen to me this year, is I guess the best way to put it. Which is a bit ironic, because I knew many things would be happening to me - so the fact that I was still surprised probably says something about how I prepared myself.

Anyway. I actually wrote and posted this just around the new year with my usual set of questions, but I felt very unsatisfied by the original so now - nearly a full month into 2019, I'm re-writing my post and doing a new reflection of 2018 with some new questions, some old questions, and hopefully a more in-depth and proper reflection of what 2018 was really like for me.

So, as per the usual - let's get started!

Hoping for a better 2018!!

The end has come. Kouhaku finished. Johnny's Countdown has passed. White team won (woops, spoilers?) Now it's just time to wait for January 3rd, for all the new years specials, and then fast forward to 99.9 season II, which by the way, I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT.

But before I get ahead of myself, let's take a look back at 2017 and see what type of year it was. I know for many people, particularly in the states, it was a fantastically shitty year all across the board. On a personal level? I still have not really come to a conclusion about what I think. So, let's take a look, shall we?

My stance on MaoJun

Do I think they are actually dating? The hell if I know. I'm not Mao and I'm not Jun.

Would I like it if they were dating? HELL YES.

Would I be upset if they were not dating? Absolutely not. Mao and Jun are there own people, I'm not going to dictate their lives for them.

What do I think of all the tabloid articles? As a general principle, I rarely believe tabloids unless it contains an actual interview from the person themselves. So tabloids that are like "a friend of a friend said Mao and Jun are dating" I do not believe. The tabloid articles that have more direct interviews (Like the recent Josei Jishin one) I'm more inclined to believe, but unfortunately, usually those interviews give us no actual information whatsoever.

What do I think about Mao's answers in the recent Josei Jishin article? I'm conflicted. I'm honestly very, very conflicted. Which is actually why I decided to make this post.

Come on 2017, bring whatever you got

It has reached that time of year again - the end of it. Is 2016 finally coming to an end? It's almost a bit hard to believe. I honestly can't believe tomorrow is January 1, and yet, I'm also super excited and eager for 2017 to come. Before I'm going to let that happen though, it's time for my usual year-end review post!

Let's Welcome in the New Year - 2016!

I used to do this on my livejournal every year, but since I've kind of stopped posting there and this blog seems to be the slightly more relevant/active one, I'll be doing my annual year-end review here. To start off, as per the usual  here is a table outlining the games I've played, books I've read, movies and shows watched.

My deal with Ohmiya and Sakumoto

Okay, before any Ohmiya or Sakumoto fans get really mad at me, this is not a post where I call you guys crazy/insane/whatever--I'm not belittling anyone for liking these two pairings. You are free to ship whoever you want. I just really needed to write this out because for some weird reason a lot of Sakumoto and Ohmiya have been appearing on my dashboard on tumblr, and I'll be honest--If I had to be honest about pairings I didn't like all that much it would be these two.

Again, let me get this straight, I'm not saying that you are not allowed to like these two ships, I'm just saying I was never a big fan. So what is this post about? Honestly, it's me trying to work out what exactly it is about Sakumoto and Ohmiya that bugs me. What I mean is, I will say I am not a fan of Sakumiya or Ohba or whatever, but that really just means I don't care about it much. If I see someone shipping it on my dash I think "aw that's cute" and move on. When I see Sakumoto or Ohmiya, more often than not I find myself actually raising my eyebrow and thinking "Uh.... what?" like I just cannot see what the shipper is seeing. And I'm not really sure what brings out this instant negative reaction.

Before I get started, I should probably mention, I am a fan of Matsumiya. Notice how I don't say I "ship" Matsumiya, and that's really because... shipping for me implies that I really want them to be in a romantic relationship and I don't. I mean, I love Matsumiya fic and I don't mind reading about them in a romantic relationship but at the crux of it I just really like how Jun and Nino interact with each other and the situations that can occur when two people like them come in contact with each other. So I am a fan of Matsumiya, I don't necessarily ship them. And really, it's that mindset that has allowed me to be pretty impartial to any and all pairings in Arashi because I like Arashi as a group due to the way they interact with each other.

So... back to the question--why the hell does Sakumoto and Ohmiya bug the hell out of me so much? The thing is when I notice things in their shows, I'm not like "ew gross", I'm fine with it. I enjoy it as much as any fan because Arashi interacting with Arashi is great. It's something about... oh shit, I guess I might be blaming fans here. The thing is.... the way people ship Sakumoto and Ohmiya seems really intense I guess?

Like with Sakumoto--their entire relationship seems to be built on lots and lots of angst and them avoiding each other because of what happens in the past (Jun fangirling Sho like crazy). I'm not a fan of angst, so that's probably why Sakumoto weirds me out a bit. AT THE SAME TIME... I find the idea of Sakumoto hilarious because I find it a bit ridiculous? Again, you are free to like and enjoy them, this is purely me talking about what I think of Sakumoto. And it's hilarious. Like, you'd have to be blind to miss that moment in Sharehouse with Jun and his enormous hover-hand, or even in concerts where Jun was grinding up on everyone during Shake It and then couldn't even touch Sho. I'm not blind, I noticed, and I just find it endlessly amusing. Why? I guess because I'm not a Sakumoto fan in the way most Sakumoto fans seem to be. I'm not seeing angst and unresolved sexual tension, I'm just seeing a whole lot of fucking awkward. A whole lot of sexy awkward (because let's be real, aesthetically Jun and Sho are the hottest pairing there is), but the awkwardness kind of wins out in the end.

With that being said what do I really think of Jun and Sho's relationship? I think they have a lot of respect towards each other, and are both incredibly serious people, which is why it might be a bit harder for them to be as silly and touchy-feely and fluffy as the rest of the members. I mean, with Jun the members are rarely too silly with him except Nino (hi, the bias is showing, yes I know), and occasionally Aiba (if you haven't noticed I also have a huge flag for Kaze trio). Sho and Ohno tend to be a bit more reserved about it, Sho especially and again I think it's just due to their personalities as the more serious two of the group.

I guess the thing that weirds me out is how people can take a relationship that really... is quite stiff and awkward on screen and turn it into something romantic. I'm no genius on romance and in general, romance has always been hard for  me to really grasp, so I guess this type of romance that Sakumoto fans seem to like... just really confuses me and I end up finding it annoying. I guess?

Again, hope I'm not offending anyone or any Sakumoto fans. I'm just trying to work out my own thoughts here.

Moving onto Ohmiya on the other hand--their relationship has always, always, looked like fanservice to me and I think it's because the members themselves tried to push it as such. It's the type of thing that always made me feel a bit reserved about boybands and fangirls, and so Ohmiya has always made me... roll my eyes. When I first got in to Arashi, it was like a bingo board and Ohmiya was the obligatory fanservice slot and I have yet to feel any different.

LET ME BE CLEAR - I realise that pretty much everything is fanservice. I know. But Ohmiya was pushed So. Damn. Hard. They had an entire music station talk that just focused on Ohmiya, This was all during 2005-2007 by the way, they don't do it as much anymore. And let me get this clear, I don't dislike the idea of Ohmiya, and it's not like I hate seeing Ohno and Nino interacting, nah, I think it's as entertaining as the next fan, but I guess due to how much they were pushed I'm just hyper-aware that it's not real and can't seem to suspend reality like I do the rest of the time? And then when I see fans freaking out about every single little Ohno/Nino detail and making screencaps of Ohno and Nino obviously being jealous of "person x" for daring to touch their hubby/lover/whatever... well, I will admit I raise my eyebrows and get a bit weirded out. Although to be fair, you do this with any pairing and I would raise my eyebrows. But I guess I seem to see posts like that more often with Ohmiya so most of my annoyance is aimed at them.

So to sum it up, I don't understand Sakumoto!angst and Ohmiya has always seemed a bit more fake than all other types of fanservice because they tried to push it so hard back in the past.

Wow, that is a load off my chest and has cleared up a lot for me. Now that I know what bugs me about it, I can proceed to stop feeling so annoyed whenever something shows up on my dash. I mean, yes there is always the option to ignore, but sometimes the moment is genuinely funny without the obligatory shipping comments. And I just always felt bad for being so petty about something like this. I guess you can't like everything though. >.<
